Why You Should See an Audiologist Instead of “The Other Guy”

When it comes to your hearing health, whom do you want to manage your care?

You have a choice of whom will manage your hearing health, and it is up to you to make an informed decision. By choosing Ohio Valley ENT, you will be cared for by one of our licensed audiologists.

For those who are unfamiliar with the title “audiologist” …

An audiologist is a hearing health care specialist. Audiologists have, at a minimum, a master’s degree, and many now have a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree. This is a total of 6–8 years of college education. Coursework includes evaluation of hearing loss, balance disorders, electrophysiology, hearing aid fitting, aural rehabilitation, patient counseling, and many other related areas of study.

In addition, an audiologist must obtain, at minimum, 20–30 hours of continuing education each year to maintain certification and licensure. An audiologist is the most qualified specialist you can choose to manage something as precious as your sense of hearing.

Now, what if you choose “the other guy”?

There are many places that you can go to purchase your hearing aids, and it is important to understand that many of these places do not have audiologists (or very few audiologists) to manage your hearing health care. A hearing instrument specialist, as they are often called, is not required to have a great deal of education to dispense hearing aids. In the state of Ohio, a “hearing aid dealer” (as they are also referred to) must be at least 18 years of age, of good moral character, have no infectious diseases, and have passed a qualifying examination. This is all that is needed for an individual to be licensed to sell hearing aids.

With this information, we feel that there should be no question as to whom you should entrust the care of you and your family. Here at Ohio Valley ENT, we have two audiologists who work closely with our physicians to bring you the quality hearing health care you deserve. Don’t see one of “the other guys” when you can receive the high level of service available here at Ohio Valley ENT.
